Ruth Ann Maahs

Ruth Ann Maahs passed away on July 10, 2013 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She was born on November 6, 1944 in Neodesha, Ks. to Jess and Odetta (Mullens)Powers.

Ruth grew up in Fredonia, Ks and graduated from Fredonia High School in 1962. After high school Ruth attended Mercy School of Nursing in Ft. Scott, Ks. She graduated from the three year program with a degree in Nursing in 1965.  Ruth was a registered nurse for more than 40 years and worked in various specialty areas.

Ruth married Ivan Leroy Maahs on December 10, 1966 in Springfield, Mo. 

Ruth was a member of River of Life in Poplar Bluff. She was a generous person and although she birthed one son she adopted countless kids and was known as “Mama Ruth” to many.

 Her hobbies included collecting bibles and fountain pens, and she loved antiques.  In her younger years Ruth was an excellent sharpshooter and enjoyed demonstrating her keen eye.

Ivan and Ruth had a love of small cars, MG’s in particular, and participated in many Gymkhana Motorsport events.

 Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Odetta Powers, her sister, Helen Wilson, her spouse, Ivan Leroy Maahs, and sister-in-law, Gwen Dryer.

 Ruth is survived by her son Hanz, daughter-in-law Heather and grandson Lawson Maahs, her Father-in-law, Gordon Foster and sister-in-law, Jane Woodruff. Surviving nieces and nephews include Dennie and Judith Gier, Ron and Pam Thuma, Pat and Deanna Wilson, Larry and Robin Stanoshek, and numerous great nephews and nieces.

 Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 6-8 pm at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home 844 Cedar Street, Poplar Bluff. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday July 14, 2013, in the funeral home chapel. Ruth will be laid to rest next to her husband Ivan, at Newton Burial Park in Nevada, Mo. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 10:00 am.

 Memorial  donations may be made to: The Breadshed at  a non-profit organization in Poplar Bluff.

Betty McCormick

Betty Faye McCormick, 74, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., died July 9, 2013 at the Mark Twain Caring Center. 

Mrs. McCormick was born April 27, 1939, in St. Charles, Mo., to the late Olon H. Morris and Floy M. (Carver) Morris.  She was owner of the Wagon Wheel Tavern and enjoyed crocheting, game shows and John Wayne movies.  She was also a  member of Eagles EERI 3303 and American Legion. 

On November 12, 1980, she married Leo McCormick in Scott County, Mo.  He preceded her in death December 2005.

Survivors include her daughter, Bobbie Hickman of Naylor; son, Steve Heinsz of Chaffee, Mo.; one sister, Lois Hammer of Hilton Head Island, N.C. and one brother, Robert Osiek of Champaign Ill.; five grandchildren, Leo McCormick, John Wells, Zachery Weed, Thurman Wallace and Michael Gillum; four great-grandchildren, Addison and Landon Weed; Preston and Kelsey Wells.

Also preceding her in death, one daughter, Brandie McCormick.

Mary Ellen Brand

Mary Ellen Brand, 82, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away July 9, 2013, at Mark Twain Nursing Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mrs. Brand was born February 21, 1931 in Chicago, IL , to the late Thomas Joseph and Mary Ellen (Joyce) McGuire.   In 1951 she was married to Gordon Brand in Chicago, Il.  He preceded her in death on October 1, 2009.  She had worked as a banquet waitress for many years.

Survivors include her children, Rita Cannon, Bernadette Wiley, Moira Brand, Mark Brand, Ellen Restis and Beth Rahe; three brothers, Allen McGuire, Thomas McGuire, and Robert McGuire; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. 

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday July 13, 2013 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff  followed by funeral services  at 11 a.m. in the chapel, with Rev. Joseph Kappilumakkal Mathai, CMI officiating.  Burial will be held in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

Ronald Eugene Humphrey

Ronald Eugene Humphrey, 65, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Humphrey was born July 8, 1947 at Poplar Bluff. He retired from the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam. He enjoyed making and flying kites, working on bicycles and lawnmowers.

He is survived by one sister, Marian Whoberry and husband, Jerry of Wappapello, Mo. and one brother, Danny Humphrey of Poplar Bluff.

His mother, Clara Mae Humphrey preceded him in death.

Visitation for Mr. Humphrey will begin at 10a.m. Friday July 5, 2013 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, 844 Cedar Street Poplar Bluff, Mo. followed by funeral services at 11a.m. in the chapel, with Ron Fowler officiating. Burial will be held in the Missouri State Veteran Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.

Betty Caroline Fisher Medbourn

Betty Caroline Fisher Medbourn, 95, was born June 11, 1918, in Morehouse, Mo., and died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., at approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013.

Mrs. Medbourn graduated from Christian College, Columbia, Mo., with a degree in art, moved to Culver, Ind., where she was mentored by Jean Williams.  She continued painting and sculpting throughout her life.  She was active in Morehouse and Sikeston duplicate bridge groups, in Culver Methodist Church, WSCS, was a life member and a past president of the Tri Kappa sorority.

Mrs. Medbourn was prededed in death by three siblings, Jane Fisher Reed Hendon, Helen Fisher Childs and Roger Powell Fisher, and her parents, Dwight Louis Fisher and Grace Helen Powell Fisher, both of Logansport, Ind., and later of Morehouse, Mo.  The Fisher family originally came from England in the 1700’s and owned and operated the Himmelberger-Harrison Lumber Company in Morehouse for many yerars. Mrs. Medbourn was the last of her generation in the Himmelberger/Powell/Fisher family.

She was the matriarch of our family and was a moving and loving sperit who loved al of us.  We will miss her terribly.  Forever.

Mrs. Medbourn was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Marion Medbourn Sr. of Culver, Ind., and by her granddaughter, Stacey Caroline Mott of Bowling Green, Ohio.  She is survived by three children, Sally Anne Medbourn Mott of Bowling Green, Ohio, Susan Elizabeth Medbourn McDonough of Poplar Bluff; and Samuel Marion Medbourn Jr. of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; four grandchildren, Eric Charles Mott of Lancaster, Ohio. Samuel Matthew Bernard Medbourn of Glen Ellyn, Elizabeth Ann Medbourn O’Brien and Gerard Joseph McDonough III, borht of Chicago, Ill.  She has three great-grandchilren, Peyton Stacey Mott and Austin Tanner Mott of Lancaster, Ohio., and Niare Grace O’Brien of Chicago.

Visitation and services will be from 1-3 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff with Rev. Calvin Buhler of New Home Baptist Church officiating.  Burial willbe held in the Masonic Cemetery in Culver, Ind.

Zella Mae Harrison

Zella Mae Harrison, 79, of Fairdealing, Missouri passed away June 29, 2013 at her residence. She was born October 17, 1933 in Wynn, Arkansas to the late Virgil Emmet Henson and Bonnie Darnell Henson.

On October 15, 1945 She was married to William {Billy) Harrison in the First Baptist Church at Bay Arkansas. He preceded her in death on June 25, 1989.

She is survived by her children, Kenneth Harrison of Potts Camp, Mississippi, Fran Atwell of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Peggy Harrison of  Fairdealing, Missouri, Penny Gardner of Irvington, Alabama and Calvin Harrison of Fairdealing. Her sisters, Shelby Hasting of Neelyville, Missouri, Marie Carter of Truman, Arkansas and Mary Ellen Princeton, Missouri and Wanda Joe St. Cin of Rodgers, Arkansas. Brothers, Emmett Dean Henson of Poyner, Missouri. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

she was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two children; Earl Harrison and Patsy Marie Harrison. Two brothers, William Joe Henson an Garland Henson as well as two sisters, Betty Fortney and Maxine Leroux.

Mrs. Harrison was a member of the Independence Missionary Baptist church of Neelyville, Missouri. She enjoyed working in flowers, gardening and worked on farm and quilting.

visitation will be Tuesday July 2, 2013 10:00 a.m. in the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel of Neelyville, Missouri with the funeral starting at 11:00 a.m.. Brother Bobby Brooks officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Coffeeville, Mississippi Wednesday July 3, 2013.
