Joyce Warren Cannaday Majors

Joyce Warren Cannaday Majors, 69, of Harviell, Mo. passed away Tuesday August 13, 2013 at her residence. She was born February 2, 1944 at Lavalle, Missouri to the late Wallace W. Warren and Nellie Dorothy Deitz Warren.

On March 26, 1961, at Poplar Bluff, Missouri She was married to Von Cannaday. He preceded her in death on September 1, 1982.

She is survivied by her children Lisa Thomas and husband Darwin of Doniphan, Missouri and Kim Barron and husband Steve of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Brothers, Ulysses E. Warren and wife Donna of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Terry W. Warren and Karen of Neelyville, Missouri. Three Grandchildren, Garrett Thomas, Casie Pyle and Meagan Barron as well as three great-grandchildren, Piper Pyle, tyler Thomas and Hunter Thomas.

Joyce had been a nurse and worked at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and flowers. She was a member of the Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Harviell, Missouri.

Visitation will be Friday August 16, 2013  starting 11’00 a.m. with the funeral following at 1:00 p.m. in the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel of Neelyville, Missouri.  Burial will be in the Kinsey Cemetery following services.

Sammy Alford Sr.

Sammy Alford Sr., 59, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. passed away August 12, 2013 at Harviell, Mo.. He was born December 10, 1953 at PoplarBluff, Missouri to the late Earl Arlford and Maxine Posten.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Arnold, his children,Connie Spencer and husband Donald of Harviell, Mo., Sammy Alford Jr. and wife Misty of Scott City Mo., Kevin Alford and Marah as well as Ashley Stnford and Justin Evans. His Mother Maxine Posten. Sisters, Robin and Larry Wilson, Dee and Kelly Vanderburg and Lori Lady and Paul. One brother, Roger Alford. Nine grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren also survive.

He enjoyed working and motorcylcles.

Memorial visitation for Mr. Alford will be August 18, 2013 starting at 2:00 p.m. in the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel of Neelyville, Mo.  with the memorial service starting at 3:00 p.m.

Betty Louise Cawley

Betty Louise Cawley, 80, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Mark Twain Caring Center.

Mrs. Cawley was born January 27, 1933 in Granite City, Ill. to the late Dock and Nina (Conner) Mathenia.  She was a homemaker and enjoyed embroidery and watching “Castle” on television.

On September 18, 1954 she married William David Cawley.  He preceded her in death in 2005.

Survivors include her children, Janette Kanell of Poplar Bluff, Shirley Tatro of Warren, Michigan, Luevade Posey and Glen of Kempner, Texas, Glenn Cawley and Lisa of Fairhaven, Vermont, Casey Cawley and Kim of Poplar Bluff, Kathleen Fain and David of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Gladys Butler of Bethalto, Ill.; as well as 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Bonnie Louise, who died in 1958. 

Visitation for Mrs. Cawley will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday August 12, 2013 followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, 844 Cedar St., Poplar Bluff, Mo., with Elder John Walker officiating.  Burial in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Harold Calvin Gillihan

Harold “Loyd” Calvin Gillihan, 75, of Wappapello, Mo.,  passed away on August 8, 2013, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gillihan was born July 28, 1938, in Little Rock, Ark.  He served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include two brothers, John Gillihan of Springfield, Mo., and Ronnie Gillihan of Poplar Bluff; his children, Clyfton Southard  of Wappapello, Shawn Southard of Paragould, Ark., Angela  Childress of Holland Mich., and Calvin Gillihan of Shelbyville, Mich.; 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a cherished uncle to Teresa Campion and Jason Gillihan and will be truly missed.  He also leaves behind two of his most special friends, Chester and Sarah, of Ehrenberg, Ariz., who knew him as “Cornbread”. 

Preceding him in death were his parents William and Ruby Gillihan and four brothers, Rudell, James, Dempsey and Thurl Gillihan.

A memorial service was held  August 10, 2013, in  Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Carney Johnson

Carney Johnson, 81, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Tuesday,  August 6, 2013, at the Westwood Hills Heathcare.

Mr. Johnson was born March 27, 1932, in Poplar Bluff, to the late Marshall and Sarah (Spencer) Johnson.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading and cooking. 

Survivors include his children, Portia Johnson, Marshall Johnson and Aaron Johnson; one sister, Lela McDonald and one brother, Frankie Johnson, as well as three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death are three sisters, Cordelia Johnson, Clara Johnson and Evelyn Johnson and one brother, Cecil Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Judy Harwell

Judy Harwell, 70, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Monday, August 5, 2013, at the Westwood Hills Healthcare.

Mrs. Harwell was born July 19, 1943, in Florence, S.C., to the late Martin and Floread Jackson.   She retired from Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where she worked in Labor & Delivery.  She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and enjoyed working.

On November 8, 1974 she married Clyde Harwell in Doniphan, Mo.  He preceded her in death July 16, 2012.

Survivors include her children, Sandy Hatchell, Allen Shaw, Steven Shaw, Stanley Shaw and Dora Burns; two step-children, Rose Marie Jones and Janis Hale; one sister, Edna Cooley and one brother, Jim Jackson, as well as six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. 

A memorial visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 followed by funeral services at 10 a.m., at Temple Baptist Church, 1813 Barron Rd. Poplar Bluff, Mo.  Rev. Steve Patterson and Bill Rhames will officiate.

James Robert Lane

James Robert Lane, 58, of Oxly, Missouri passed away August 2, 2013 at his residence. He was born March 18, 1955, at Poplar Bluff, Missouri to the late James Elbert Lane and Minerva Elizabeth Craft Lane.

on July 22, 1977 at Oxly, Missouri He was married to Wanda Sue Brooks. She survives.

Also surviving, one Son, Robert “Rob” Lane of Oxly, Missouri. One sister, Brenda Soencer of Doniphan, Missouri, three brothers, Gary Lane of Fairdealing, Missouri, Rick Lane and wife Michell of Oxly, Missouri and Terry Lane and wife Patricia of Silva, Missouri. Several Nieces also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Elbert Lane on January 26, 1993 and Minerva Lane on July 5, 2004.

James was the owner/operator of Lane’s Concrete Service. He enjoyed coaching summer league baseball, coaching pee wee softball at Naylor, working with Naylor School Booster Club, hunting, fishing and being with his family.

Having been a life long resident of the area, James will be greatly missed by his family as well as many friends.

Visitation for James will be Monday August 5, 2013 in Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel starting at 11:00 am with the funeral folowing at 2:00 pm in the Chapel. Burial will be in the Berger Cemetery at Ogelsville, Missouri with Rick Holden officiating.

Anthony Atkisson

Anthony Allen Atkisson, 40, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Atkisson was born October 10, 1972 at St. Charles, Ill.  An auto mechanic, he enjoyed cutting wood, scrapping, demolition derby and spending time with family.  He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his children, Kreg Atkisson and wife, Tiffany and Aron Atkisson; his mother, Genevieve Fuwell; three sisters, Julie, Brenda, and Jonnie; one brother, Ricky Atkisson.

He is preceded in death by his father, Leo Atkisson.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Kinsey Cemetery, Harviell, Mo.,  with Ron Fowler officiating.

The family request  memorials made to Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, for funeral expenses.

Patricia Ann Gaddis

Patricia Ann Gaddis (Mom Mom), 67, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013, at her residence. 

Mrs. Gaddis was born September 28,1945 in Moline, Ill.   A member of Eagles Lodge 3730 and Eagle Bitches, she retired from Gates Rubber Company as a supervisor, where she had worked 30 years.  She loved her kids and grandkids and was an avid Cardinal fan.  She was of the Christian faith.

In 1966 she married Russell Gaddis, father of her three children, Tracy Harget and James PeeWee  White, Rushell Lazalier and Scott, Paul Dewayne Gaddis and wife, Trina; a sister, Marilyn Haney and husband, Paul; five grandchildren, Chelse Bigham, Courtney Lazalier, J.E.S. Lazalier, Madison Gaddis and Taytum Gaddis; three great-grandchildren; Carson Tinsley, Kinsley and Jase Bigham.

She was called mom by many including Thomas Pee Wee Morgan, Dewayne Henson and Luke Moore.

She was preceded in death by her step-father, J.T. Simpkins; her parents Wilford Black and Pauline (Posey) Black; two  brothers, Otis Lawrence and Willis Black.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013, followed by funeral services at 1:30 p.m., at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff .  Burial will be in Dogwood Cemetery, East Prairie, Mo.
