Gerry Buffington

Gerry Daniel Buffington, 47, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.,  died Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at his home.  He was born October 12, 1966, in Poplar Bluff, to Alta Dunlap Buffington and the late Vernon Buffington. 

Gerry Dan was a member of First Baptist Church but also attended services at the VA Chapel with good friend Chaplain Bill Hatch, and became close to many there. He was a graduate of Poplar Bluff High, an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, enjoyed talking on the phone, reading, watching his roses grow, and was especially close to his nephew Cody Buffington, who shared his life with Gerry Dan every day. 

He is survived by his mother, Alta Dunlap Buffington; brother Gary Vernon Buffington of Poplar Bluff; two sisters, Gayla Buffington Pruett (Bloyce) of Pleasant Hill, Mo. and Glenda Buffington Bell (Steve) of Batesville, Ark., 5 nephews, Corey Vernon Buffington (Chyanne) of Fairdealing, Mo., Cody Dillon Buffington of Poplar Bluff, Benjamin Dale Pruett (Becky) of Pleasant Hill, Steven Lenehan Bell, Jr. (Ann) of Charleston, S.C. , and John Buffington Bell of Springdale, Ark.; one niece, Flesha Pruett Billmeier of Ohio; 4 great-nephews, Montana and James Buffington of Fairdealing, Brandon Pruett of Pleasant Hill and Kaleb Billmeier of Ohio; and many aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Buffington; his maternal grandparents, Homer and Mary Deckard Dunlap; and paternal grandparents, Claude Buffington Sr. and Mollie Allison Buffington. 

The family would like to say thank you to Gerry Dan’s special caregivers, Matthew Brown and Bessie McRoy.

Visitation will begin at 1p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, Poplar Bluff, Mo. followed by funeral services at 2p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Bill Hatch officiating.  Burial will be in Kinsey Cemetery in Harviell, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63131

Rose Vinson

Rose Vinson, 70, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at her residence. 

Mrs. Vinson was born August 10, 1943 in Poplar Bluff, to the late Arlie and Elva (Gossett) Robinson.

A member of Eagles 3730, she was a homemaker and had been a cook at Tower Restaurant. She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking and animals.   

Mrs. Vinson was previously married to Donald Vinson, who survives. She is also survived by her 4 children, Pamela Baker, Debra Vinson, Duane Vinson and Tina Vinson-Powers and adopted daughter, Diana Kammerer; 3  sisters, Donna Malone, Barbara Ward and Glenda Clark, one brother, Gary Provance; 11 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as a sister, Candy Brown and brother, Jimmy Dale Provance and two great-granchildren, Alizsa Vinson and Jonathan Carroll.

Visitation will be held from1-2:30p.m.Friday, June 13, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home.  A graveside service will follow at 3p.m. at Duley Cemetery, with Chaplain Ken McAnulty and Rev. Everett Gunter officiating

Billy Dale O’Barr

Billy Dale O’Barr, 70, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away June 5, 2014 in the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born May 5, 1944 at Clarkton, Missouri to the late William Monroe O’Barr and Goldie E. Tune O’Barr Tippit.

On August 23, 1975 at Portageville, Missouri he was married to Daile F. Brooks. She survives.

Also surviving two sons, William Dale O’Barr and Travis Dale O’Barr,  both of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; one sister, Elaine Ellen Tippit of Bellmont, Mississippi and one brother, James Robert “Bobby” Tippit of Gatewood, Missouri; as well as two grandchildren, Melina and Lucky O’Barr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a brother, Jimmy L. O’Barr.

Mr. O’Barr had worked in cabinet manifacturing for computer and closures. He enjoyed gardening, watching the news and his grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. O’Barr will be Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel at Neelyville, Missouri starting at 6:oo p.m.

Gertrude Dillinger

Gertrude Marguerite Dillinger, 80, of Dexter, Mo., passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Home in Dexter, Mo. 

Mrs. Dillinger was born June 9, 1933, at Dudley, Mo, where she spent most of her life before moving to Dexter.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, cooking, growing flowers and feeding birds and was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ.

She married Carl Freddie Dillinger on September 23, 1950, in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1999.

Survivors include five daughters, Sharlette Kirkman (David) of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Belinda Hribovsek (Bill) of Dexter, Arlessa Russell (Kenneth) of Dudley, Lora Sissum (David) of Dexter and Catherine Rider (Bruce) of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; one son, Carl Dillinger Jr. (Cona) of Wappapello, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Obie Hale and Henrietta Louise Hale and four sisters.

A GRAVESIDE service will begin at 10am Monday, June 9, 2014 in Dudley Cemetery with Travis Quertermous officiating.

Elda L. Harlan

Elda Louise Harlan, 89, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

Elda was born August 17, 1924 in Neelyville, Mo., to DeWitt and Eva Kittredge. 

On November 15, 1943, she married James Wesley Harlan.

She retired from Three Rivers College cafeteria, as head cook in 1992, where most athletes and staff called her “Mom”.  Her favorite times were spent with family, friends and most especially her grandchildren.  She set an example for us all on how to be the best mother and grandmother ever.  Elda never met a stranger and before very long friends turned into “family”.  She was a great and loving role model to every heart she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Bonnie Hill, sister, Edna Breznik and three brothers, Warren Kittredge, Russell Kittredge and Jimmie Bishop.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda French (Harvey) of Harviell; son, Alan Harlan (Alesia) of Doniphan; son-in-law, Gene Hill of Poplar Bluff; sister, Gloria Stevens of Fenton; 10 grandchildren, Darlene Shackleford (Kevin), Linda Lea Oesterreicher (Paul), Jim French (Darla), John French, (Niki), Joe French (Pinar), Lisa French, Jerry French, Laura Rush, Wesley Harlan, (Yolanda) and Jessie Harlan along with 25 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, followed by funeral services at 3p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  Bishop Matt Brooks will officiate and assisted by Pastor Todd Taylor.  Burial will be held in Memorial Gardens.

Bessie M. Perkins

Bessie M. Perkins, 87, of Poplar Bluff Mo., died Tuesday June 3, 2014 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

She was born December 24, 1926 at Neelyville, Missouri to the late James Lewis and Lydia Jackson.
Mrs. Perkins was cook in the Neelyville school system. She enjoyed scratch off tickets, cooking, and going to basketball and softball games. Mrs. Perkins was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Neelyville and a lifelong Butler county resident.
On Nov. 27, 1961 she married Jacob Perkins Jr.  He preceded her in death on June 12, 1983.
Survivors include 6 daughters, Glenda Young of Detroit, Mich., Judy Gabriel of North Carolina, Debra Hardy of Dallas TX., Fern Glover and Faye Lewis of Ypsilanti, Mich., Ola Johnson of Qulin, Mo.; 4 sons Ronald Lewis of Detroit Mich., Harlie Lewis of Belleville, Mich., Duwayne Perkins of Neelyville Mo., and Louis Perkins of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband also preceding her in death are her parents, James Lewis and Lydia Jackson; one son Roger Elliot Lewis; 3 sisters, Myrtle, Bertha, and Pearl; and 4 brothers, James, Herman, Rudolph, and Joe.
Visitation will be Sat. from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel with the funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Ronnie McCain officiating. Burial will be at Neelyville, Cemetery.

Alice R. Minton

Alice R. Minton, 60, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 at her residence. 

Mrs. Minton was born November 10, 1953, in St. Louis, Mo.,to the late Vernon and Naomi Zimmer. 

Mrs. Minton was a homemaker.  She was married to Hollis Minton, who survives. 

Also surviving are children, Scott Zimmer and Corey Bertman; a sister, Robin Arthur; a brother, Michael Zimmer and one grandchild, Trinity Zimmer. 

Mrs. Minton was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers; Glenn, Curt and Kenny Zimmer.

Visitation will be 2-3pm Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home 844 Cedar St. Poplar Bluff.  A GRAVESIDE service will begin at 3:30 pm at Berger Cemetery Oglesville, Mo., with Rev. Gene Riddle officiating.
