Clarender Davies

Clarender Davies, 93, of Piedmont, Mo., passed away November 27, 2014 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Davies was born September 19, 1921 in Aiken, South Carolina to the late Henry Johnson and Julia (Lucas) Johnson. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service and enjoyed reading and listening to gospel music. She was a member of the YHWH True Remnant Church.

She is survived by eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, eight nieces and ten nephews.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, two sons; Ronnie Davies and Jackie Davies, four sisters and five brothers.

A memorial service may be held at a later date.

Joyce Knodell

Joyce Marie (Hinkle) Knodell, 81, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, November 28, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Knodell was born September 29, 1933 in Zion, Mo. to the late Charley and Zella Hinkle.  She was a retired register nurse and a pastors wife for 50 years.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff and enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking.

On December 24, 1955 she married Tommy Luther Knodell at the Mt. Pisgah Church in Zion, Mo. He survives.

Other survivors include her children, Penny Knodell Keathley and husband, Ken, Kurt Knodell and wife, Julie, Cynthia Knodell Barks and husband, Cary; two sisters, Phyllis Whitener and Jan Bollinger and one brother, Bob Hinkle; her grandchildren, Matthew Keathley (Deana), Allison Ladd (Aaron), Caleb Knodell, Cody Knodell, Kelly Barks and Mallory Barks, as well as three great-grandchildren, Elliott, Grant and Lydia Keathley.

She is also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Thompson and Leanna Huffman.

Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 in the church with Dr. Ken Keathley and Dr. William Vail officiating.  Burial will be in the Wappapello Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse or Mo. Baptist Children’s Home.

Stella Magill Parrish

Stella Magill Parrish, 74, of Carterville, Ill., formerly of Poplar Bluff, Mo. passed away at 10:01 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in West Frankfort with her family by her side.

She was born September 18, 1940, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Henry and Vada (Hendrix) Magill. She married Tarrell Parrish who preceded her in death on July 2, 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Jamie Magill Birchfield and husband, Michael of West Frankfort, Ill.; a brother, Jerry Magill and wife, Karen of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; two sisters, Patsy Cardwell of Hot Springs, Ark. and Frances Gower of Poplar Bluff, Mo. as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers, Jackie Magill and Joy Magill Sr. and by an infant brother, Lonnie Magill.

Stella was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, Ill. She was a dental assistant for over 40 years for Dr. Post and Dr. Christian in Poplar Bluff and Dr. Beadle in Carbondale, Ill. She loved to go fishing and was a huge St. Cardinals Baseball fan.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, 844 Cedar Street, Poplar Bluff, Mo. Funeral Mass will begin at 11a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Poplar Bluff, with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Butler County Mo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

CHARLES HODGE

Charles A. Hodge, 85, of Poplar Bluff passed away at the home of his daughter, Jacqulyn Barks on November 21, 2014.

Mr. Hodge was of the Baptist faith and in his early years pastored several church’s in this area.  He was retired and was the owner of Poplar Bluff Upholstery, for several years.  He was a member of the SEMO Veterans Honor Guard since his retirement from the Missouri National Guard.

He is survived by 5 daughters, Elizabeth Westerfield, of Paducah, KY, Diana Scott, Sharon Haley, Deborah Barks and Jacqulyn Barks all of Poplar Bluff; 1 brother, Jerry Hodge of Poplar Bluff, 10 grandchildren; 31 great- grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Hodge is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Anna Hodge, 4 brothers; Benjamin, Bill, James and Virgil Hodge; 4 sisters; Mildred Porch, Edith Parshall, Norma Jean Hawkins, and Donna Kay Goins.

On this day we are sad but celebrate the life of our father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather.  He was a friend to all that met him and knew him.  We are proud to call him dad and that our Heavenly Father is holding him in His arms for eternity.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 29, 2014 noon to 1pm with the funeral service at 1pm in the Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home chapel; 844 Cedar St. Poplar Bluff.  Rev. Rowdy Boyer will officiate.  Interment will be in Berger Cemetery, Oglesville, MO (also known as Carola Cemetery)

Madge Sample

Madge Wright Sample, 94, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at her home.

She was born May 1, 1920 in Cape Girardeau to the late James E. Wright and Della Mae (Martin)Wright.  On Feb. 18, 1939 she married Henry A. Sample.  He preceded her in death in 1983.

Mrs. Sample is survived by her children, Saundra Sample, Carol Fauss, Kay (Dennis) Smothers, Darlene (Alan) Lohmann, and Joe Henry (Marla) Sample; 2 sisters, Shirley Thomas and Phyllis Conyers; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents,  7 brothers, 5 sisters, 1 son-in-law and 1 granddaughter.

Mrs. Sample was a charter member of Cape First Assembly of God.  In 2007, she moved to Poplar Bluff and attended Bluff First Assembly of God.  For 45 years she worked for the shoe factory in Cape Girardeau; Brown Shoe, International, and Florsheim Shoe Co.

Madge lived her life centered on God, family and church.  She leaves behind a heritage of faith to the generation that follows and will be remembered not only for her faithfulness to God, but for her quick smile, great sense of humor and love for others.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at  Cape First Assembly of God, Silver Springs Road, Cape Girardeau, Mo. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., at the church, with Rev. Gary Brothers and Rev. Dan Martin officiating.  Burial will be in New Lorimer Cemetery, Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Art O’Conner

Art O’Conner, 50, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2014 in Wayne County, Mo.

Mr. O’Conner was born June 5, 1964 in Litchfield, Ill. to the late Vondie O’Conner and Beulah (Andrews) O’Conner. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.  He was a commercial electrician and enjoyed his dogs, computers and anything outdoors.

On September 23, 1989 he married Kimberly (Ham) O’Conner in Poplar Bluff.  She survives.

A son, Dalton Lee O’Conner and wife Jessica also survives,sisters, Margaret Lizenbee and Tracy Davis; three brothers, Vondie O’Conner Jr., Michael O’Conner and Calvin O’Conner.  He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donnie and Kathy Ham.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, 844 Cedar Street, Poplar Bluff, Mo.  Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Steve Patterson officiating.  Burial will be in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to: Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, 26 Broadway, 14th floor, New York, NY  10004.

Sharon Rippee

Sharon Sue Rippee, 69, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

No more sorrow, no more pain, she’s walking the streets of glory.

Mrs. Rippee was born August 27, 1945 in St. Louis, Mo.  She was of the Baptist faith.  A homemaker, she enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, yard sales, and spending time with her grandchildren.

On August 29, 1967 she married JR Rippee in Kansas City, Mo.  He survives.

Also surviving include her children, Michael J. Rippee, Paulette Lovann Pickard and Sharon Nicole Rippee all of Poplar Bluff; Debbie Jackson, a dear friend and like a daughter to her; her brother, Charles Edward Alexander and wife, Grace and family of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; Trinity Nicole Smith, Daniel Wesley Smith, Alyssa Faith Jeanette Rippee, Nikya Ann Rippee, Nevaeh Monay Rippee. One granddaughter, Jayla Rehanna Rippee, preceded her in death.  Also surviving are several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Bobby BJ Rippee and Charlie Rippee, both of St. Louis, Mo., Billy Rippee of Butner, N.C., Cathy Green of Springfield, Mo., and Thurma Lee Griffith of Poplar Bluff.  Also surviving is a very special friend, Billie Stevens of Poplar Bluff, along with many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, Jack Malone and Dora (Plemmons) Alexander also preceded her in death.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, 844 Cedar Street, Poplar Bluff, Mo.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014, in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Chuck Clark officiating.  Burial will be in the Kinsey Cemetery near Harviell, Mo.

Carolyn “Betty” Massey

Carolyn “Betty” Massey, 92, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.,  passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Westwood Hills Healthcare.

Mrs. Massey was born June 27, 1922 in Poplar Bluff to the late David M. Gullette and Leona (Perry) Gullette.  She was a member of Fellowship General Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff.  A retired LPN she also was a foster grandmother at Oak Grove School.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and camping.

On December 24, 1939 she married Charles W. “Jim” Massey.  He preceded her in death in 1972.

Survivors include her children, David Massey, Lea Massey, Susan Rahm and Luke Massey and wife, Sharon; three grandchildren, Shannon Miller, Tim Westray, and Sandy Lewallen; six great-grandchildren, Hunter, Caleb, Savanah, Kallon, Ayden and Alex.

A graveside service and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the City Cemetery in Poplar Bluff. The Rev. Byron Beck will officiate.
