Dianna Sue Nations

Dianna Sue Nations, 69, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Westwood Hills Healthcare.

Mrs. Nations was born May 2, 1946, in Corning, Ar., to the late Herman and Lola Mae Goodman.

She was a member of Fellowship General Baptist Church in Coon Island.

Mrs. Nations was a cook at many local restaurants.  She enjoyed fishing, cooking and watching hummingbirds.

On September 29, 1978 she married Paul Nations in Poplar Bluff.  He survives.

Also surviving are children, Carolyn Cowin, Geoff Anderson, Wesley Nations, all of Poplar Bluff; step-daughter, Teresa Champ of Morgantown, West Virginia, and step-son, Clifford Paul Nations of Parkersburg West Virginia; sisters, Linda Kay Brewer of Barnhart, Mo. and Peggy Joyce Davis and one brother, Gene Goodman , both of Corning, Ar.; 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and special friends, Walter and Sandy Anderson.

Mrs. Nations was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Thelma Louise McGowen.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff, followed by the funeral service at 12 p.m., with the Rev. Allen Leutert and Gene McElhaney officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Katherine Batson

Katherine L. Batson, 85, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Batson was born January 4, 1930 to the late Eli Maxwell Goodrum and Jenifer L. (Wiggins) Goodrum.

She had worked as a telephone operator and then advanced to a plant designer.  She enjoyed bowling,winning several trophies and was recognized in the Bowling Hall of Fame in Poplar Bluff. She also loved playing bingo, going to flea markets and yard sales. She was of the Baptist faith

She is survived by two sons, James H. Batson (Janie) and Donald R. Batson (Candy) and one daughter, Karen L. Fox (Leslie); five grandchildren, James J. Johnson, Nathan Batson, Holly Batson, Don Ray Batson and Jenny L. Batson; as well as three great-grandchildren, Conner Johnson, Kendra Batson and Brody Ray Batson.

Mrs. Batson was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Frederick Goodrum, Herbert Goodrum, Edgar Goodrum, Eli Goodrum Jr., and Ollie Goodrum.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 30, 2015 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff  followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery with Pastor Wes Tayloe officiating.

Gale D’Wayne Jones

Gale D’Wayne Jones, 64, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Jones was born May 5, 1951, in New Madrid, Mo., to the late Clarence and Clara (Fowler) Jones.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1969-1974, during the Vietnam War, and was an airplane mechanic. He enjoyed reading and was of the Protestant belief.

On January 10, 1971 he married Patricia (Bryeans) Jones.  She survives.

He is also survived by a son, Larry Joe Jones and a daughter, Grace Crowley; a brother, Kevin Jones; as well as 4 grandchildren, Mark Jones, Maggie Jones, Alyson Crowley and Chloe Crowley.

Two grandchildren, James Dunn Jones and Ayden Crowley also preceded him in death.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at the Mo. State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Mo., with full military honors, followed by interment.  Ron Fowler will officiate.

Geraldine (Garner) Childs

Geraldine (Garner) Childs, 95, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., formerly of Florida, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015 at home. 

Mrs. Childs was born April 15, 1920, in Pratt, Mo., to the late Martin Otto Garner and Mary Etta (Thurman) Garner.

She spent her childhood in Naylor, Mo., where she attended grade school later attending high school in St. Louis. She was in the motel business with her sister, in Sikeston, Mo., until they sold the business in 1974 and Mrs. Childs retired.  She moved back to Mo. from Florida in 1996 to care for her sister who was ill and passed away in 1999. She spent several years in Florida, where she played shuffleboard with a league and won several trophies. She was a member of Westwood Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff.

Mrs. Childs was previously married to Charlett Highfill, who preceded her in death in 1965.  She then married Mark Childs in 1972 in Sikeston, Mo.  He preceded her in death in 1999.

Survivors include her daughter, Connie Ellen Potts; 5 granddaughters, Deana Sue Newton, Darla Jean Keene, Daona Michelle Parker, all of Poplar Bluff, Donna Luanne Thornburgh of Clarksville, Tn. and Diana Kay DeSpain of Campbell, Mo., 13 great- grandchildren and 11 great- great- grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by 1 brother and 4 sisters.

Visitation will begin 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Westwood Baptist Church, in Poplar Bluff, followed by the funeral service at 11a.m., with Dr. Steve Proctor officiating.  Burial will take place at 3 p.m. in  the Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Mary Evelyn Wilkerson

Mary Evelyn Wilkerson, 87, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., peacefully walked her last mile on earth Saturday, November 14, 2015, passing away at her home.

Mrs. Wilkerson was born October 25, 1928, in Benton, Ill., to the late Arlene and Dollie Mae (Burlison) Sandusky.

She was a member of Bluff City Apostolic Worship Center.  She had worked at American Superstore and was “Nana” to Kim and Wayne Marquis and family.  She loved taking care of her dog, Skeeter and going to church.  She had been a pastor’s wife and a mother.  She loved reading her Bible, gardening and visiting her dear friend, Grover “Scotty” Scott.

She was married to the Rev. Harry Wilkerson on July 28, 1945, in Mount Vernon, Ill.  He preceded her in death March 4, 2009.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mona Lee Wilkerson, Wanda Mae Sandusky, Wilma Ann Reynolds, Lois Jane Spears and Ruby Arlene Pasquino and one brother, Charles Edward Sandusky.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Stafford) LaDean and husband, Gordon; a brother, Arlie Franklin Sandusky and LuAn of Machestney Park, Ill.; and one grandson, Trent Stafford (Andrea) of Nashville, Tn.; as well as many family members and loving friends.

Services will be held at Bluff City Apostolic Worship Center. Visitation will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, November 19, 2015.  The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2015 with Pastor Jerry Williams and grandson, Trent Stafford officiating. Burial will be held in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Dale Wells

Dale Roland Wells, 83, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Monday, November 16, 2015 at his home.

Dale  was born June 14, 1932, in St. Louis County, to the late Goldie and Leah Wells.

Mr.  Wells was of the Baptist faith.  He was an installer for Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T, for 31 years.  He was active in forming the Telephone Pioneers Museum and then did volunteer work with the Pioneers.  He also enjoyed time spent with his family and piddlin.

On May 18, 1958 he married Marie Bechel, in Miner, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are children Andy (Retta) Wells of Poplar Bluff, Martha (Steve) Pace of Campbell, Mo. and Tim (Amy) Wells of Lacey, Wa; a sister Dorothy Bock; 3 brothers James, Charles and David Wells; 4 grandchildren Randy Felts and fiancé Keely, Jeanie (Adam) Kiefer, Kenny (Shanda) Felts and Julie (Josh) Cannaday; 9 great-grandchildren; Madison, Spencer, Alexis, Keaton, Cayden, Makena, Parker, Owen and Beckett.  A special brother-in-law Jr McConnell and a special sister-in-law Betty McConnell.

Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Wells.

Visitation will begin at 11 a. m. Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. in the chapel, with Rev. John Crowley officiating.  Burial will follow in City Cemetery

Francis Cole

Francis Pauline Cole, 68, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, November 13, 2015, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Cole was born August 3, 1947, in Taylor, Mo.  She attended Stringtown Pentecostal Church and Grace United Methodist Church.  She worked in housekeeping at Westwood Hills Healthcare. She loved animals, yard sales, reading, watching SyFy and was an Elvis fan.

On November 2, 1981 she married Samuel Richard Cole.  He preceded her in death December 13, 2006.  Previously she was married to Jimmie G. Davis, who preceded her in death.

Her parents, James Taylor Bruce and Ellen Mae (Hill) Alberson also preceded her in death, as well as three sisters, Velma Aydelotte, Jo Parnell and Christine Smith; and one brother, Fred Bruce.

Survivors include her daughter, Renee Stromatt (Tim) of Waldorf, Md.; two brothers, Doyle Bruce and Jimmy Bruce Jr., both of Poplar Bluff; and two grandchildren, Mistianna Stromatt and Zac Stromatt.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2015, in the chapel, with Rev. J.C. Bryant officiating.  Burial will take place in the Mo. State Veterans Cemetery, Bloomfield, Mo.

Donnie Hornbeck

Donnie Ray  Hornbeck, 85, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Mark Twain Nursing Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Hornbeck was born July 4, 1930, in Poplar Bluff, to Ransom and Rosetta Hornbeck.  Both precede him in death.  He was a member of Third Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon.  He enjoyed hunting and gardening.  Donnie served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  He had worked as a school custodian and for Bunny Bread as a baker and loader.

On December 28, 1956 he married Betty Jane Hornbeck.  She preceded him in death December 16, 2013.

His daughter, Debra Trout, of Poplar Bluff survives; as well as one brother, Ralph Hornbeck of St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Hornbeck is also preceded in death by his sisters, Bertha Whitley and Lula Bell Moore and 4 brothers, Ira, Carl, Jessie and Everett Hornbeck.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2015 followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The Rev. Ralph Mayes and Rev. James Capps will officiate. Burial will be held in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery with full military honors.

Jesse Chaffin

Jesse C. Chaffin, 57, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Chaffin was born to Jesse C. and Wanda Louise Chaffin February 1, 1958 in Poe Clinic, Mo. He had worked in construction and carpet sales for Dennis Young.  He enjoyed flying, fishing, collecting arrowheads, flea marketing, yard-work and working in the garage.

On July 4, 1999 he married Amanda (Dietz) Chaffin in Poplar Bluff.  She survives.

Other survivors include children, Jesse B. Chaffin, Jennifer Duckett, Amber Harwell and Stephanie DeClue; his sister, Sharon Brady; 12 grandchildren, Jessie C. Chaffin, Jessaleigh Chaffin, Billie, Maddison, and Devon Hussman, Elliott Guzman, Kaitlyn LaChance, Spencer and Gracie Harwell, Kerstein, Jocelyn and Adeline DeClue.

He was a loving husband.  He raised a son and three daughters, and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 12, 2015, in the chapel, with Rev. John Sprouse officiating.  Burial will follow in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Shirley Carlene Larmie

Shirley Carlene (Stout) Larmie, 67, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away at her home Saturday, October 31, 2015 after a courageous eight and a half year battle with cancer.

Shirley was born in Mountain View, Mo. on November 29, 1947 to Wilborn “Shorty” Everett Stout and Dorothy Elizabeth (Gower) Stout.  She had been a resident of Poplar Bluff since 1951.

She married Robert “Bobby” Larmie on July 12, 1968. He survives.

Shirley was a lifelong member of Bluff City Apostolic Worship Center.  She worked for a time at Family Shoe Store, Poplar Bluff Transfer, and Oak Grove School as a teacher’s aide.  She also babysat, but was predominately a homemaker and kept an immaculate home that was a gathering place for family and friends.

Shirley loved reading, cooking, cross-stitching, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family and friends.  She loved the fall, trips to the beach and the Smoky Mountains, swimming, playing card games, the St. Louis Cardinals, Vera Bradley purses, decorating her home for the holidays, and watching American Idol and Dancing With The Stars.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy; her husband, Bobby; her twin sister, Sheila Smith (Cevis); another sister, Valerie Kiefer (Dan); a brother, Darrell Stout (Karen); her daugher, Shelley Mitchell (Corey) and son, Justin Larmie (Crystal); her seven grandchildren, Allison Davis (Michael), Clayton and Skyla Mitchell, Caedyn, Noelle, Lillian, and Jack Larmie; as well as two great-grandchildren, Carly and Avery Davis.

Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Shorty; brothers, David Lee Stout and Nathan Leon Stout; and her daughter, Lisa Renee Larmie.

Services will be held at Bluff City Apostolic Worship Center. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2015.  Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 4, 2015, with Pastor Jerry Williams officiating.  Burial will be in the Kinsey Cemetery, Harviell, Mo.
