Mary Hillis Obituary


Mary Evangeline McCullough Hillis, 54, died at 4:30 p.m. July 1, 2010, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mary was a resident of Poplar Bluff and a member of the Third Baptist Church.

Born September 11, 1955, in Cairo, Ill., the daughter of the late Walter and Audrey McCullough of Charleston. She was a 1974 graduate of Charleston High School.

In 1978 she graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

She was employed as libriarian with Greenville Elementary School for the past 32 years. She possessed a deep, caring love, not only for every one of her students, but for all the children everywhere.

She and her husband were owners an operators of Hillis Transport, LLC of Poplar Bluff.

On June 30, 1990, she married Willard Kenneth Hillis, who survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Eddie Fiske; a granddaughter, Erin Nicole Fiske of Harviell; a grandson, Kenneth Jacob Fiske of Harviell; two brothers and sisters-in-law Kenneth and Chris McCullough of Cape Girardeau and Richard and Verna McCullough of Charleston; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Daisy and Gerald McClain of Charleston, Dessie and Tom Tramel of Powell, Wyoming , and Dorothy and Fred Turner of Sikeston.

Mary was a true blessing to so many and leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Fiske. Visitation was held from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home , 844 Cedar, Poplar Bluff with funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Rev. Ralph Mayes officiated and burial in the Kinsey Cemetery near Harviell, Mo.
