Mercedes Currie passed away September 25, 2011 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, Poplar Bluff. Burial in Morocco Cemetery with Rev. Ivory Dean officiating.
Mercedes "Dee" Currie was born on April 26, 1945, to Flora Mae Currie and William Louis Currie, in Chicago, Ill.
Dee graduated from Poplar Bluff High School. She then went on to pursue a career in nursing in East St. Louis, Ill in 1980. After a few years she moved back to Poplar Bluff, Mo. and graduated from nursing school in 1989. She continued her career at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, and later retired in 2007.
Dee enjoyed playing bingo, cards and quilting. She also enjoyed being around family, friends and especially sitting around with Noni Currie and eating ox tail soup and cornbread.
Mercedes Currie accepted Jesus Christ at an early age at New Home Missionary Baptist Church, under Rev. Otis Hawes Sr. in Providence.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Louis Currie and 2 sisters, Mary and Martha Currie.
Survivors include her mother, Flora Mae Currie and her children, Mark (Michelle)Currie of Houston, Tx., Andre (Evelyn) Currie of Aberdeen, MD., Monique (Thomas) Currie-Jennings of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Brian (Lindsay) Thornton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 3 sisters Ella Mae Gibson, Delores (Roosevelt) Patterson and Sharon Currie all of Chicago, Ill.; 5 brothers. Cleveland ( Marie) Currie of East Stroudsburg, Pa., William Currie of San Jose, Ca., Jonathan (Dorothy R.I.P.) Currie of Kankaee, Ill., Colie (Carla) Currie of Jackson, Tn, and Walter ( Noni) Currie of Poplar Bluff; 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and a very special friend/daughter Tiffanie Brown.
