Julie Mae Russell

Julie Mae Russell, 79 of Poplar Bluff was called home November 23, 2010.  Visitation will begin at 10AM Friday the 26th at Bays Spring Church off M Hwy.  Funeral service will follow at 11AM Friday with Elder Cletus Powell officiating.  Burial will be at Bays Spring Cemetery.

Mrs. Russell was born July 4, 1931 to the late Fielen and Virgie Medley Johnson.  She was a member of Bays Spring Missionary Baptist Church.

September 30, 1950 she married the late James Russell in Piggott Arkansas.  They had seven children:

Shirley Russell, Peggy Daughheter, Phyllis Ford(Larry), Judy Smith(Kyle), all of Poplar Bluff.  John Russell(Judy), Edward Russell ( Rita) of Poplar Bluff and Don Russell (Leslie) of Roff Oklahoma.

Two sisters; Kathy Johnson and Pansy Spencer of Poplar Bluff.  Three brothers; Jack Johnson of Poplar Bluff, Jerry Johnson (Jo Ann) of Grandin; and Jim Johnson (Donna) of Shreveport, LA; and one sister-in-law Thelma Russell Wilcutt of Poplar Bluff; one brother-in-law Fred Smith of Dexter, MO  Six grandsons and one granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews. 

Family requests in lieu of flowers make memorials to Bay Springs Missionary Baptist Church

Thomas Staggs

Thomas Staggs, 92 of Poplar Bluff  went to his heavenly home, Sunday morning November 14, 2010 at his residence.

Mr. Staggs was born August 29, 1918 in Keota Haskell, Oklahoma to the late Samuel H. Staggs and Pearlie T. Luster Staggs.  He was a retired auto mechanic and member of Pentecostal Holiness Church in Poplar Bluff.  His greatest passion was playing his harmonica at his church.

On August 18, 1972 he married Maxine “Mickey” Griffith in Las Vegas, Nevada and she survives.

He is also survived by many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nita Judd of Oklahoma and Jeanie Larson of California, and many nieces and nephews.

Thomas was a man who had a hurtful life, but he knew the One to turn to for answers and healing… his Savior Jesus Christ. 

Mickey will greatly miss her friend.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday November 18, 2010 at Antioch Cemetery in Stigler, Oklahoma.  Brother Lester Galbraith  officiated

John Pitts

There will be no public services for Mr. Pitts.

John M. Pitts, 66 of Poplar Bluff passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010 at his residence.  Mr. Pitts was born June 1, 1944 in Maynard Arkansas, to the late James Edward Pitts and Josephine Ivey Rogers.  He had served in the United States Army.  He was a deck hand on the riverboat.  He enjoyed motorcycle riding, working on cars, fishing and traveling. 

March 5, 2004 he married Barbara Rains Pitts in Poplar Bluff and she survives.  Also surviving are his children:  Jeana Hindgardner; Bumpass, VA; John Crawford and wife Connie of Carthage, TN; step children: Heather Merritt of Poplar Bluff; Jessica Sparks of Poplar Bluff; Desiray Nelson of Doniphan; Raymond Nelson of Doniphan; and Johnny Nelson of Doniphan

Also surviving are three sisters; Alice Young of Poplar Bluff; Frankie Phillips of Peace Valley, MO; and Louise Pitts of Poplar Bluff.  Three brothers: Junior Ash of Romeoville, IL; Jerry Pitts of Princeton, IL and William Pitts of Elmhurst, IL 

He was preceaded in death by brothers James Pitts and Wesley Rogers

He has twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

No services are planned.

Carol Jean HendricksonThornberry

Carol Jean ” Hendrickson” Thornberry passed away Nov. 10, 2010 at the age of 70, at her residence.  Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Fowler Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  A graveside service will be held on Monday Nov. 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Gardens, Poplar Bluff.  Vernon Curry will officiate.

Mrs. Thornberry was a member of Highland Drive Church of Christ and taught Bible School for years.  She previously lived in St. Louis and worked as a Medical Lab Tech at John J. Persing V.A. Medical Center.  She enjoyed cooking and caring for others.

She was born on February 14, 1940 to parents Larry Allen Hendrickson and Elsie “Landis” Hendrickson, both preceding her in death.

On December 19, 1969 she was untied in marriage to William Harold Thornberry, who survives.  They have 2 children Joy Yowell and husgand Lincoln of St. Louis and Lana Thornberry of Poplar Bluff.  Alson surviving are two grandchildren Aiden and Colin Yowll; one brother Randy Lynn Hendrickson of Ozark, Mo. 

She is also preceded in death by one brother Richard Hendrickson.

Basil Phelps

Basil Boyd Phelps, 59, of Poplar Bluff passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at the Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff, followed by a graveside service at 3:15 p.m. at the City Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Nelson  officiating. 

Mr. Phelps was born  August 21, 1951, in Poplar Bluff and was a lifetime resident of Butler County.  He was of the Baptist faith.

He was the owner and operator of Downtown Furniture in Poplar Bluff.  His hobbies were deer hunting, being with his grandchildren, he enjoyed all his customers and visiting with everyone who came into the store.

He married Teresa Bilbrey on January 6, 1989 in Poplar Bluff, she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Charles Phelps and wife, Melissa of Wappapello and Scott Phelps and wife, Lori, of Poplar Bluff; four sisters, Margaret Lefrink, Rita Jolliff and Joan Baysinger, all of Poplar Blufff and Juanita Sells of Fredricktown; two brothers, Coy Phelps and Racil Phelps, both of Poplar Bluff; six grandchildren, Taylor Phelps, Clayton Phelps, Tyler Phelps, Alyson Porter, Charleyse Phelps and Marissa Phelps.

He was preceded in death by his parents Vard Phelps and Lula Cobb Phelps; three brothers, Thomas Phelps, Vard Ray Phelps and Clifton Phelps; and three sisters, Geneva Griffin, Dorothy Stull and Evelyn King.

Don Edwards

Donald Augustus Edwards, 74 of Piedmont Missouri passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2010 in the comfort of his daughter’s home.

He was born in Hickory Flat, Mississisppi in 1936, son of the late Clyde Augustus Edwards and Addie Bee Edwards who still survives.  He and Edith Mae Bell were married on November 9, 1957 in Arkansas.

Don served in the Air Force as a Staff Sgt. for 12 years.  He worked as a aircraft mechanic at McDonald Douglas before finishing out his career as a carpenter.

He is survived by one sister Rebecca ( Douglas) Dinkins, and two brothers, Jack (Kathy) Edwards and Jerry (Martha) Edwards.  He was preceded in death by one brother Marvin (Addie Mae) Edwards.

He has four daughters, Vicci Ott, Becky Beatty, Teresa Graham, and Beverly (Wally) Meyer.

He was most proud of his grandchildren, which he considered the roots, rather than the limbs of his family tree, Heather(Jeff) Brockert, Markelle Graham, Olivia Meyer, Jack Meyer, and the newest member, great-granddaughter Stella Grace Brockert.  He was preceded in death by his grandson Thomas Augustus Ott.

Don Edwards will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  He was a heck of a man with a heart of gold who loved every moment of life and went out with his boots on.
