David Brent Colter

David Brent Colter, 52, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Colter was born October 12, 1961, in Poplar Bluff ,to the late Leonard and Lorraine Colter. He worked as a boat mechanic and could do most anything.  He enjoyed building and racing boats and loved being a Dad.

He is survived by his children, Shelby Colter and William Colter; his sisters, Kathy Gibbs (Terry), Carol Keeney, Linda Faust (Ed), Elaine Lannom (Lanny), Karen Rodery, JoAnn Pierce (Dennis); his brothers, Alan Colter, Gary Colter (Debbie); one sister-in-law, Gail Colter and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Imogene Clark and brother, James Dale Colter and three nephews.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m.  Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff,  followed by funeral services at 2 p.m, with Rev. Ralph Mayes and Shane Mallard officiating. Burial in the the Duley Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

Jimmie M. Bishop

Jimmie M. Bishop, 76, of Williamsville, Mo. passed away May 19, 2014 at his residence. 

Mr. Bishop was born August 18, 1937 in Poplar Bluff, Mo. He was of the General Baptist faith.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 and a member of the Eagles and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf and was a truck driver

Survivors include his 5 children, Diane Kiefer (Dennis), Dee Brooks, Dawn Bishop, Jimmie Bishop II, and Greg “Boomer” Kammerer; 2 brothers, Wayne and Ricky Bishop, as well as 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Bishop and Mildred Tarpley-Bishop and a daughter Debbie Hanner, who passed away November 28, 2013.

Visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, May21, 2014, followed by funeral service at 8 p.m., at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  Rev. Keith Luke will officiate.  A full military honors service will be held Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Mo. State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Mo.


In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home

Frank Earl Jr.

Frank Earl Jr., 75, of Alton,Ill., passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, at his home. He was a Poplar Bluff resident.

Mr. Earl was born June 29, 1938, at Earl, Arkansas, to the late Frank Earl Sr. and Callie Lee (Rice) Earl.  He retired as a steel labor mechanic and enjoyed gardening, fishing, singing and playing the guitar.  He was of the Baptist faith and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. 

On October 8, 2013 he married JoAnn (Thomas) Earl in Poplar Bluff, Mo.  She survives.

He is also survived by his children, Annette Earl, Ida Earl, Kevin Earl, Latisha Earl-Holloway, Frankie Johnson and Frank Earl lll; five sisters, Mary J Earl, Pricilla “Peaches” Earl-Newbern, Jean Earl-Wise, Quencella Earl- Ridgeway and Malliah Earl- Marant; two brothers, Charles Ricky Earl and Lorenzo “Butch” Earl; as well as nine grandchildren. 

Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff, Mo., followed by funeral service at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Johnny Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Mary Faughn

Mary Dollie (Loy) Faughn, 89, of Odessa, Mo., formerly of Poplar Bluff, died May 12, 2014. 

Mary was born January 4, 1925, in Sommersville, Mo., to the late Edwin R. Loy and Osa Mae (Thomason) Loy. 

On January 10, 1944 she married James G. Faughn, in Piggott, Arkansas.  He preceded her in death in 2006.

Mrs. Faughn is survived by her children and their families, Robert and Alice (Faughn) Deskins of Lee’s Summit, Mo., son, John Deskins preceded in death; Harold Faughn and children Beth and Chris of Jefferson City, Mo.; James “Mark” and Terrie (Hellums) Faughn, and their children, Scott and Sierra of Poplar Bluff; Iva Ann Eggert and daughters, Amber of Odessa, Mo. and Shaundel of California.  A daughter who preceded her in death in 2003, Margaret Sue’s children, Kimberly and Shane of Arizona also survive. Others include a sister, Rebecca (Loy) Dills of St. Louis, Mo., and one brother, Henry and Shirley Loy of St. Louis; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery with Bishop Kent Miller officiating

James A. “Jim” Smith

James A. “Jim” Smith, 92, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away May 8, 2014, in Madison, Alabama.

 Mr. Smith was born September 19, 1921, in Hunter, Missouri, to the late Fred Smith and Cassie Bowman Smith.

 By age 14, he had already fallen in love with Maxine Jordan, with whom he would spend more than 70 years. They were married on December 5, 1943, in Tonopah, Nevada. His dear Maxine preceded him in death by only 22 days.

 Mr. Smith served in the U.S Air Force during World War II. He was a retired salesman with the Blackwell Baldwin auto dealership in Poplar Bluff, and a member of First Baptist Church.

 Survivors include his daughter, Carol Smith Cook (Harold) of Madison, Alabama; three grandchildren, Shannon Cook Glass (Craig) of Arlington, Texas, Erin Cook Schrage (Steve) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Allison Cook of Huntsville, Alabama; and seven great-grandchildren, Jenna Glass, Andrew Glass, Anna Schrage, Rachel Schrage, Kyra Schrage, Mark Schrage and Daniel Schrage.

 Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, as well as his son, James Dean “Jay” Smith, and brother, Larry Smith.

 Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Dr. William Vail officiating.

James Dowd

James Lester Dowd, 75, of Broseley, Mo., passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. 

Mr. Dowd was born October 12, 1938, in St. Louis, Mo.  He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.  He was an ordained minister for 40 years and pastored different Baptist churches in the area. He loved reading his Bible and watching St. Louis Cardinal Baseball.

On October 11, 1958 he married Shirley (Williams) Dowd, in Poplar Bluff.  She survives.

Also surviving are his daughter, Cindy Walters (Roger); three grandchildren, Summer Lynne Bruhn (Brady), Lance Walters (Caitlin) and Megan Walters;  two great-grandchildren, Gracyn Rae Bruhn and Brooks Dean Bruhn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Monroe Dowd and Rosetta (Timmons) Dowd. 

Visitation wil be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff followed by the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Steve Proctor officiating.

Michael Ray

Michael Joe Ray, 56, of Williamsville, Mo., passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014. 

Mr. Ray was born September 16, 1957 in St. Louis, Mo. He worked as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and construction for Ben Turner.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.  He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Branch, Mo. 

On June 21, 2012 he married Cynthia (Tolie) Ray.  She survives. 

Other survivors include his children, Michael Ray of Topeka, Ks. and Dakota Ray of Independence, Mo.; four stepdaughters, Melissa Cobb, Tiffany Cobb, Chyenne Cobb and Cherokee Cobb; his mother, Patty Ritz and step-father, Wallace Ritz; four sisters, Sharon Nichy, Janie Lane, Jeanie Roles and Misty Reynolds; four brothers, Steve Ray, John Ray, Tim Little and David Little; one grandchild, Haiden and three step-grandchildren, Carmine, Domenic and Michael.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson Ray.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon, Wednesday, May 7, 2014, followed by funeral service at 1 p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, in Poplar Bluff, officiated by Rev. Byron Beck.  A second visitation and funeral service will be held at Hedges-Scott Funeral Home, 1270 S. Hwy. 5, Camdenton, Mo., on Saturday, May 10, 2014.  Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with funeral service at 1 p.m. Rev. Michael Puckett will officiate. Burial will be in the Allee Memorial Gardens in Camdenton, Mo.

Sammy Lee Williams

Sammy Lee Williams, 71, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away May 2, 2014, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Williams was born July 6, 1942 to the late Jethrow and Mary Lane-Williams, in Deering, Mo.

Mr. Williams retired as a welder and then sales.  He enjoyed photography and was a member of True Believers Missionary Baptist Church.  He was also a member of the P. A. L. Athletic Boxing League. 

He was married to Marilyn Williams, who preceded him in death on November 18, 1997.

Mr. Williams is survived by his 8  children, Diane Bass (James), Caroline Davis, LaTina Lee (Darnell), Rodney Williams, Charmaine Brown (Willie), Simona Ware (Bobby), Scott Williams and Rochelle  Briggs; two sisters June Marie Webb and Dortha Williams; and one brother, Rev. Dr. Johnny Williams; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Previously he was married to Erma Williams, Benton Harbor, Michigan, who survives.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Coleman.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. The Rev. Dr. Johnny Williams will officiate the services.  Burial will be in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

James Dale “Cadillac” Colter

James Dale “Cadillac” Colter, 69, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away May 1, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Colter was born on August 24, 1944 in Poplar Bluff. He was the son of the late Lenard and Lorraine Colter and Daphine McGhee. 

He loved being a husband, father and grandpa. He was of the Baptist faith and love helping people, he served as a volunteer firefighter at Lake Road Sub Station, when he wasn’t driving over the road for many years. He served in the United States Army and National Guard and was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed fishing and gigging.

On October 20, 1968 he married Gail Levan  in Rock Island, Ill.  She survives.

Other survivors include his children, Michelle Murphy (Tubby), Karmen Lucas (Mike), James Dale Colter Jr. and Thomas Colter; six sisters; Kathy Gibbs (Terry), Carol Keeney, Linda Faust (Ed), Elaine Lannom (Lanny), Karen Rodery and JoAnn Pierce (Dennis); four brothers, Alan Colter, David Colter, Gary Colter (Debbie) and Jeff McGhee (Patty); three sister-in-laws, Sandy Spain (Paul), Charlotte Donlson (Les) and Anita Hupp (Bob), one brother-in-law; Roger Levan (Dorinda); nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Frank and Dorothy Levan; one sister, Imogene Clark; a brother-in-law, Troy Levan, and three nephews.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 4, 2014 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ralph Mayes officiating. Internment will follow at the Duley Cemetery in Poplar Bluff with full military honors.
