Zelma Beauton Maddox Thurman

Zelma Beauton Maddox Thurman, 95, of Harviell, Mo., passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Thurman was born on Oct. 8, 1920 in Ridgley, TN. She worked as a homemaker and was a pastor’s wife, serving several area churches in a span of 60 years. She loved her family, feeding birds, squirrels and Ms. Tigger. She attended Independence Missionary Baptist Church.

On Oct. 6, 1934 she married Elder H.R Thurman in Hickman, KY. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2003.

She is survived by her sons, Ray Thurman of Potosi, MO., Jim Thurman of Jonesboro, AR., and Roy Thurman of Jonesboro, AR.; daughters, Peggy Reinbott of Harviell, MO., Sue Thurman Beller of Harviell, MO., Joy Davis of Jonesboro, AR., Marilyn Lee of Central Point, OR.; 25 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bennie Maddox and Hester Mae Barber Maddox; her son, Elder Gene Thurman as well as her brothers and sister.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Funeral will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Elder Ray Thurman officiating with Elder Bobby Brooks assisting. Burial will follow at the Antioch Cemetery.

Bradley Nelson Santos

Bradley Nelson Santos, 33, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away April 22, 2016 at his home.

He was born June 14, 1982 to Luis Santos and Sandra Breckinridge-Cardwell and raised by step-mother Streto Santos.

Brad was a former member of the Butler Co. Sherriff’s Dept. and the 1137th Military Police Co. out of Kennett, Mo., where he attained the rank of Sergeant.  During his time in the service Brad was deployed to Kosovo in 2003 under Operation Enduring Freedom and on State Emergency Duty in both New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and in Caruthersville after the tornado in 2006.

His federal awards included the National Defense Service Ribbon, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal W/M Device, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Non Article 5 Medal for the Balkans, as well as numerous state awards.

Mr. Santos is survived by his parents; as well as his children, Dominique Santos, Mariah Santos, and Romeo Nelson Santos; stepsister, Ashley Cardwell and stepbrother, Michael Smalley.

Mr. Santos is preceded in death by a stepbrother, Christopher Smalley.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Mo. with military honors.

 

Clyde Stone

Clyde Ray Stone, 81 of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Hospital.

Mr. Stone was born December 22, 1934, in Poplar Bluff, to the late Joe and Ruby (Montgomery) Stone.

Mr. Stone was a member of First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff.  He loved his church family and everyone in his Sunday School class.

He served his country as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the USS Helena during the Korean War in the United States Navy. Until his retirement in 2006, he was a barber and co-owner of Bluff Barber shop.  He enjoyed sponsoring and coaching baseball and softball teams with his good friend and co-owner, Don Orton.  He had a passion for sports and followed Raider basketball and Cardinal baseball.  He was a master woodworker and created many beautiful things.  His most enjoyable past time was spending time with his family.

May 1955 he married his soulmate, Trudy (Ramsey) Stone.  She preceded him in death March 14, 2011.

He is survived by his children, Darrell (Connie) Stone of Poplar Bluff, Treena (Phil) Murray of Poplar Bluff, Kimra (Jim) Beckett of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Don Stone of Poplar Bluff; 17 grandchildren, Shawn Stone, Houston, Tx., Apollo Stone, Oregon, Jason(Sara) Stone, Zach (Robin) Stone of St. Charles, Chad Rhinehart Stone of Washington, Jessica (Brandon) Wilson Crawford of Auxvasse, Mo., Mark (Sarah) Wilson and Nathan Murray of Poplar Bluff, Ryan Murray of St. Louis, Kami and Jodi Beckett of Cape Girardeau, Harlie Rhamy and Stormy Ward both of  Poplar Bluff; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Penelope, Sebastian and Benny Stone of St. Charles, Mo., Kylie Vaughn Stone and Faith Stone of Houston, Tx., Evan and Abby Rhinehart Stone of  Washington, Bane and Beckett Crawford of Auxvasse, Mo.

Mr. Stone was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Travis Stone.

Visitation will be Monday, April 25, 2016 beginning at 9:30 am at the First Baptist Church, in Poplar Bluff, followed by the funeral service at 11 am, with Dr. William Vail officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

Lucy Faye Boatner

Lucy Faye Boatner, 81, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She was born on August 19, 1934 in Dyer, Ark., to the late Dewey Hill and Essie (Harris) Hill.

She had worked as a LPN for a nursing home and enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, raising flowers and cooking. She was a  non-denominational church member.

She is survived by her children, Jerry Wayne Fleener of Poplar Bluff, John Thomas Fleener of McAlester, Ok. and Terry Lem Boatner of Moore, Ok.; her grandchildren, Jerry Lee Fleener, Tonya Fleener, Shawn Fleener, Rusty Swasho, Jess Powell, Allen Rogers, Gina Rogers, Janette Rogers and Jerry Hosentfel; as well as several great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lois Venable of Poplar Bluff, Shirley Shell of Ellsinore, and Pat Phillips of Pacific, Mo.; her brothers, L.D. Hill of Gideon and Walt Hill of Dumas, Ark.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Miller; one son, Rodger Buddy Fleener;  son-in-law, Ray Miller and four brothers, Raymond Hill, Bill Hill, Harvey Hill and Charles Hill.

Visitation will begin at 1p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m., at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff.

Lester Edward Moore

Lester Edward Moore, 83, of Naylor, Mo., passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Moore was born on Aug. 18, 1932 in Holcomb, Mo. He worked as a farmer and a bus driver. His hobbies included farming, fishing and his grandchildren.

On Aug. 30, 1955 he married Helen Ruth Thomason. She died on Nov. 22, 2009.

He is survived by his 2 sons, Edward Moore & wife Ann of Naylor, Mo., Cairl Moore & wife Connie of Naylor, Mo.; 2 daughters, Dianne Powell & husband Rick of Oxly, Mo., Cricket Powell & husband Wayne of Oxly, Mo.; brother, Everett Moore of Marquette, Mich.; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by 3 sisters, Verna Canaday, Hazel Lango and Mary.

Visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 5-8 p.m.  at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville, Mo. Funeral will be on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Kevin Eudaley officiating. Burial will be at Gum Cemetery in Naylor, Mo.

Bettie Raulston

Bettie Sue (Pitt) Raulston departed this life on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Poplar Bluff Regional Center after a brief illness.  She was 72 years old.

Bettie was born March 17, 1944 to the late Robert (Bob)  and Mildred Jewell (Ham) Pitt, in Poplar Bluff. Her sister Frances (Pitt) Strickland also preceded her in death.    She attended New Home General Baptist Church, where she helped with the nursing home ministry.  Mrs. Raulston enjoyed spending time with family and playing with her dachshund, Molly.  She also enjoyed baseball games, and rarely failed to watch the St. Louis Cardinals play on TV.

On June 24, 1981, she was united in marriage to Charles Raulston.  He survives.  Also surviving are two sons, Mark McMullin and wife Kim and Charles Raulston II (Chuck), all of Poplar Bluff. Two brothers, Jim Pitt and Bob Pitt;  step-children, Riley Raulston and Michelle (Raulston) Crutchfield; one grandchild, Cori (McMullin) Ruprecht; three step-grand children, Riley Raulston, Jay Raulston, Courtney Raulston, Craig Crutchfield and Kiersten Crutchfield; one great-grandchild, Max Ruprecht; nieces and nephews, Brook Hart, Robert Pitt, Jimmie Jo Pitt, Roger Pitt, Steve Pitt, Regina Miller, Robyn Pryor, Jerry Strickland, Robyn Strickland with  numerous great nieces and nephews; as well as nieces by marriage that were like daughters to her; Tresa Pratt and Lisa Aubuchon.

Bettie was the rock of the family for many years that everyone would turn to.

Visitation will begin 6pm Monday, April 18, 2016, at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, in Poplar Bluff.   The funeral service will begin at 2:30 pm Tuesday, April 19, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Calvin Buhler officiating.  Burial will be in Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Carroll Morgan

Carroll Morgan, 72, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, April 15, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Morgan was born February 29, 1944 in Biggers, Ark.  He attended Fellowship General Baptist Church and worked at Greg’s Auto Sales.  He enjoyed watching NASCAR and fishing.

On June 21, 1991, he married Linda (Joyner) Morgan in Poplar Bluff.  She survives.

Also surviving are children, Sonya Tory, Houston, Tx., Jeff Ellwanger of Canada, Tonya Bulbik of Arizona, Shelly Hunter of Arizona; 2 step-children, Jeff Carl and Charlena Dorris both of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Linda Fowler of Oregon; three brothers, Jerry Morgan of Illinois, Tony Morgan of Cooter, Mo, Tim Morgan of Paragould, Ark.; several grandchildren, but 1 special granddaughter, Cassie Carl, whom he raised, of the home; 2 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: V. L. Morgan and Wilma (Vinson)  Morgan.

Visitation will begin 10am Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, in Poplar Bluff, followed by the funeral service at 12pm, with Rev. Byron Beck officiating.  Burial will be in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

Butch Rushin

Butch Rushin, 71, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Rushin was born March 21, 1945 in Poplar Bluff.  He was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship.  For 30 years he operated Rushin Towing and was also a retired insurance adjuster.  He enjoyed race cars, fishing, hunting and watching his grandkids play ball.

On November 1, 1964  he married Mary (Watson) Rushin in Poplar Bluff, she survives.  Also surviving are children, Chris Rushin and wife, Denise, Bud Rushin and wife, Teresa and Jana Hosler and husband, Ken; one sister, Barbara Mills; one brother, Steve Rushin and six grandchildren, Ella, Emma, Robert, Ross, Colton, and Caleb.

Mr. Rushin was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Rushin and Wanda (Chappell) Rushin and a brother, Donnie Rushin.

Visitation will begin at 10am Monday, April 18, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, in Poplar Bluff, followed by the funeral  service at 11am, with Rev. Brian Sharp officiating.  Burial will be in Cochran Cemetery.

Sandra Whitmer

Sandra Sue Whitmer, 70,  of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, April 15, 2016 at her home.

Mrs. Whitmer was born August 12, 1945 in St. Louis County, Mo.  She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff. A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, yard sales and going to the sale barn.  She loved doing church activities.

Survivors include her children, Stanley Carl Whitmer (Freda), Rebecca Sue Whitmer (Donnie Davis), Janice Vincent (Ron), Raymond Whitmer (Theresa), and April LeGrand (Melvin); two sisters, Pat Roach and Margie Miller, and one brother, Jack Rusert; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Virginia Rusert; one son, Alex Loftis; a very special father to her children, James Kazzee; one brother, Carl Sonny Rusert, and one granddaughter, Haley Whitmer.

Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2016 at Memorial Baptist Church on Ditch Road in Poplar Bluff. Funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. with Bro. Dennis Ward officiating.

Raymond Simmons

Raymond Simmons, 42, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away suddenly on April 14, 2016 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Raymond was born on February 1, 1974 at Lucy Lee Hospital in Poplar Bluff, Mo to the late Raymond Taylor and Nancy Morley. He was later adopted by Allen and Diana Simmons. He attended Poplar Bluff and Neelyville schools.

On April 18, 1997 he married the love of his life Kimberly Vaughn.  Out of this wonderful marriage they were blessed with the greatest gift of all, a beautiful daughter, Amber Simmons. Other than his loving wife Kim, Amber was his whole world.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Kimberly Simmons and daughter, Amber Simmons, both of Poplar Bluff.  Other survivors include three brothers George and Chris Morley, and Mark Simmons and wife, Jennifer, one sister, Michelle/Misha Simmons, his adopted parents, Allen and Diana Simmons; his mother and father-in-law Michael and Sandy Vaughn, three brothers-in-law Michael /Gene Vaughn, Greg Vaughn and Robert Vaughn, one sister-in-law, Sherry Vaughn all of Poplar Bluff.; as well as  eight nieces, seven nephews, several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Raymond Taylor and Nancy Morley, and one brother, John Morley.

Raymond was deeply devoted to his wife Kimberly and daughter Amber. In 1992 he joined the Missouri National Guard in which he completed special training in refrigeration with high honors. After discharge from the National Guard, he went to work for the Department of Mental Health.

He loved spending time with his family, listening to music, racing hot rods, and working on cars.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.   The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday April 20, 2016, in the chapel, with Elder Lloyd Steinshouer officiating. Burial will follow at Black Creek Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.
