Verna Lerane (Vicki) Haggard

Verna Lerane (Vicki) Haggard, 87, passed away January 20, 2017 in the NHC Healthcare Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. She was born August 6, 1929 at Fairdealing, Missouri to the late Willis Mitchell and Edna Arivett. On November 20, 1984 at Ellington, Missouri she married Eugene O’Neil Haggard. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2003.

She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Hemming and husband James of O’Fallon, Missouri; as well as two sisters,  Ferrill Mitchell of St. Louis Missouri and Genon Tinsley and husband Harold of Sarasota, Florida; one grandson, Steven James Hemming and wife Amy as well as great grandchildren, Alec Steven Hemming and James Musgrave husband of Rebecca Ann (Hemming)  Musgrave; one sister-in-law, Joan Mitchell and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, as well as one granddaughter, Rebecca Ann (Hemming) Musgrave, and  brother, L.Dea Mitchell.

Visitation will be January 23, 2017 starting at 11:00 am with the funeral  following at 1:00 p.m. in the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel Inc. of Neelyville, Missouri. Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery near Fairdealing with Donnie Fowler officiating.

Jackie P. Dare

Jackie P. Dare, 64, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Jackie was born April 25, 1952 in Poplar Bluff, daughter of the late Harlen Russell and Dorothy (Davenport) Russell.  A homemaker, she enjoyed doing things with her grandkids.

On March 28, 1970 in Poplar Bluff, she married Terry Dare, who survives.

She is also survived by her daughter, Christy Hardin (Mike) and son, Wade Dare (Jenifer); two brothers, Jim Russell (Debra) and Bo Russell (Vickie); three grandchildren, Jonathan Hardin, Jeffry Hardin, and Ryan Dare, as well as one step-grandson, Brad Hooker and step-great-grandson, Jax Hooker.

Graveside service and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Mo. State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with Ron Fowler Officiating.

Jack Parham

Jack Parham, 83, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Jan. 17, 2017 at The Manor in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Mr. Parham was born on July 23, 1933. He worked as a farmer and enjoyed fishing, hunting and picking witch Hazel. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Jack is survived by his son, Norman Wade Parham of Corban, IL.; sisters, Willie Higgins and Victoria Joyce Smith; brothers, Johnny Gargus of Boonville, MS., Daniel H. Gargus of Doniphan, Mo., James Gargus of Barto, FL., and Bobby Ray Gargus of Ft. Meade, FL.; as well as 1 grandchild.

He was preceded in death by, his parents, Willie Wade Gargus and Isabelle Irene Oliver; grandparents, Harv and Nervie Oliver; sisters, Geraldine Smith and Carrybelle Hollins; brother, Junior Wade Gargus; and his best friend, Roma Garrison.

A graveside service will take place on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wilson Cemetery in Doniphan with Ricky Perkins officiating.

Melvin Gene Horn

Melvin Gene Horn, 77, of Doniphan, Mo., passed away on Jan. 15, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Horn was born on April 28, 1939 in Bernie, MO. He worked as a farmer and enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He was a member of the New Hope Church and the V.F.W. Melvin is also a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.

On December 30, 1956 he married Betty June Miller in Senatobia, MS. She preceded him in death on January 20, 2005.

Melvin is survived by 1 son, Melvin “Jay” Horn of Doniphan, Mo.; 2 grandchildren, Debra Gibson & Brandy Horn; as well as 7 great-grandchildren, Jasmine Gibson, Christian & Jordan Gibson and Reece, Laina, Landon and Shawn Horn.

Besides his wife, he is preceded in death by parents, Moody & Ora Horn; 3 sisters, Lois Flanagan, Mary Anderson, and Dorothy Carter; 2 brothers, Bob Horn and A.D. Horn as well as  2 great- grandchildren, Bryce and David Gibson.

Visitation will take place on Sat. January 21, 2017 from 11:00 – 1:00 at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. The funeral will follow at 1:00p.m. in the chapel. Burial will take place at the New Hope Cemetery in Doniphan.

Lawrence “John” Buhler

Lawrence “John” Buhler, 90, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Sat. Jan. 14, 2017 at the John J. Pershing V.A. Medical Center.

Mr. Buhler was born on April 27, 1926 in Butler County, Mo. He worked as a farmer and enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, gardening and his grandchildren. Lawrence was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He attended Harviell Pentecostal Church serving as a Sunday school teacher & Superintendent, as well as serving on the church board.

On March 24, 1948 he married Sweety Belle Barker in Poplar Bluff, MO. She preceded him in death on May 8, 2015.

He is survived by 1 son, Cecil Buhler & wife Sherin of Littleton, CO.; 1 daughter-in-law, Charlotte Buhler of Summersville, Mo.; 5 grandchildren, Mathew & Mark Buhler, Christina Hubbard, Shelia Stoops, and Melissa Holland; 9 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death is 1 son, Johnny Buhler; parents, Henry & Edna Buhler; and brothers, Carl, Clarence, Delbert, Herbert, and Orville Buhler

Visitation will be from 11:00 – 1:00 Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. Funeral will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Leroy Murray. Burial will take place in Black Creek Cemetery in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Josephine Elizabeth Chotrow

Josephine Elizabeth Chotrow, 49,  of Poplar Bluff, Mo., departed this life Saturday, January 14, 2017 at The Cedargate in Poplar Bluff.

She was born August 18, 1967, in Sikeston Mo. to the late Harry Russell and Mary (Hayse) Russell. She enjoyed reading,  spending time with her grandchildren and taking care of her home.

Surviving include her children, Richard Eugene Schaefer, Chrystal Washington, Amber Schaefer, and Angela Schaefer; one sister, Ruth Ann Schaefer; her grandchildren, Issacc Washington, Blake, Emily Alvarado, Starrlett, Richard William, Abby, and Zayden.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harry Leroy Russell Jr.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Tommy Crossen

Tommy Crossen, 68, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri,(formally of Neelyville)  passed away at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, January 11, 2017. He was born March 1, 1948 in Butler County, Missouri to the late Elmer Crossen and Mary Crawford Crossen.  In April 1967 in Neelyville He was married to Betty Ann Leonard. She preceded  him in death on June 10, 2015.

He is survived by five children, Terry Crossen and wife Erica of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, John Crossen and wife Paula of Corning, Arkansas, Mary Ainley and husband, David of Neelyville, Missouri, Scott Crossen of Corning, Arkansas and Gary Leonard of Neelyville, Missouri. three brothers, Steve Crossen of St. Charles, Mo, Tim Crossen of Sullivan, Missouri and Ray Crossen of Collierville, Tennessee, as well as one sister, Alice of Arnold Missouri. Eleven grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren also survive.

He is preceded in death by his wife, parents and one sister Peggy Stump.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Corning, Arkansas where had been the Sunday School Super attendant. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and cardinal baseball and his grandchildren. He had been a supervisor for Darlings Store fixtures of Corning, Arkansas.

Visitation for Mr. Crossen will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel Inc. of Neelyville, Missouri with the funeral following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Corning Cemetery in Corning, Arkansas with Rev. Jimmy McMasters officiating.

Claude Gene Hill

Claude Gene Hill, 79, of Farmington, Mo., formerly of Poplar Bluff, departed this life on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Farmington Presbyterian Manor in Farmington.

Claude was born November 3, 1937 in St. Louis, Mo., to the late Marion Thelma (Hill) Adams. He was a truck driver and enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He was a charter member of the Order of Eagles 3730 in Poplar Bluff and a past president of the Eagles.

On April 23, 1979 he married Karen (McCollum) Hill, in Poplar Bluff, she survives.

He is also survived by his children, Kelly Gene Hill (Stephanie) and Beth Rowland (Fred) and their mother, Sandra Hill, as well as  his son, Michael Hill and one sister, Joyce Gaye Cochran.

He was preceeded in death by his mother and one sister, Phyllis Adams.

Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. (noon) Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff,  followed by a GRAVESIDE FUNERAL at 1:30 p.m. at the Fairdealing Cemetery in Fairdealing, Mo., with Larry Evans officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manor 500 Cayce Street, Farmington, Mo. 63640.

Thelma Payne

Thelma Payne, 84, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Payne was born May 20, 1932 in Acorn, Mo. She was a member of Liberty Church and enjoyed embroidery and planting flowers.

Survivors include a son, Larry Payne and daughter, Alessa Payne; two sisters, Violet Brashear and Wilma Smith (Richard); a grandson, Benny Cook; nieces, Violet Paynter (Luther), and Debbie Foster (Phil); great-nieces, Victoria Drake and daughter, Emma Drake; great-nephew, John Griffith; and a special friend, Michael Willcut.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Payne; her parents, Ben Payne and Cora (Welty) Payne, as well as a sister, Kathleen Payne.

Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2017, followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. The Rev. Sue Hampton will officiate.  She will be laid to rest in the Cochran Cemetery.

Charles Dewayne Brooks Jr.

Charlie Brooks Jr., 36, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at his home.

He was born January 7, 1981 in Poplar Bluff. On November 22, 2004 he married Angela Marie Brooks.  She preceded him in death February 22, 2013.

He is survived by his father, Charles Brooks Sr.; his mother, Donna (Grace ) Short and step-father, Jesse Short; children, Josef Bailey and Carley Brooks; step-grandparents, Jessie and Levear Short; a sister, Wenonnah Grace and sister-in-law, Jonia Davis; one brother, Doyle Brooks and sister-in-law, Dana Brooks, as well as brother-in-law, Brandon Metz and two aunts, Carol Wilson and Dee Brooks.

He is also preceded in death by a son, Harley Brooks and grandparents, Doyle Switzer, Veda Switzer and Marie Grace.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at South Poplar Bluff General Baptist Church, 817 Arthur Street, with the Rev. Michael Pope and Rev. Steven Winberry officiating.
