Michael Ray Gibbs Sr.

Michael Ray Gibbs Sr. 70, of Poplar Bluff passed away Dec. 29,2017 at his home. 

Mr. Gibbs was born July 4, 1947 in Fisk, Mo.  He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. 

Mr. Gibbs had careers as a horse trainer, a deputy for Butler County Sherriff Dept. , and ordained minister, cement truck driver and had been a professional wrestler.  He enjoyed fishing.

Mr. Gibbs married Mary (Howard) Gibbs; she survives.  Also surviving are his children; Michael L. Gibbs and Kathy Sailor, and a brother, Charles Gibbs. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; Columbus and Mary Gibbs.

Visitation will be 1pm Tuesday, January 2,2018 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The service will follow at 2pm with Rev. Gene Riddle officiating.  Burial will be in City Cemetery.

Sarah Ellington

Sarah Ellington, 81, of Poplar Bluff passed away at her home on December 28,2017. 

She was born Nov. 1, 1936 in St. Joseph, MO.  She enjoyed playing bingo, being with family, and watching t.v.

She was married to Chester Ellington in St. Joseph, MO.  He preceded her in death Feb. 1982.

Sarah is survived by her children; Ralph White, John Ellington, James Ellington (Sharon), Deborah Ellington and Steve Cook; brothers; Ricky, Jackie and Eddie White, 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester, father William White, mother; Mary White (Despain), sisters; Mary Mignery and Frances Despain, brothers; Harold, Billy, Bobby, Jimmy, Albert, Johnny and Gary White.

There will be a visitation at 12pm Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral service will follow at 1pm in the chapel with Donna Lang officiating.  Burial will be in the City Cemetery.

Lottie Aleene Sweeza

Lottie Sweeza, 73, of Poplar Bluff passed away December 28,2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. 

Mrs. Sweeza was born Dec. 17,1944 in Poplar Bluff.  She was a member of Revival Time Tabernacle.  She enjoyed needle work, reading her Bible and watching t.v.

She was married to Noah E. Sweeza but he preceded her in death Oct.31,2000. 

Surviving are children: Marilyn Buzzell, Mary Wallace, sister, Anita Birdsong,  brothers, Blake and Russell Birdsong; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

She is preceded in death by her husband Noah, daughter Janet Davis; father, Blake Birdsong; mother, Mary Birdsong (Timmons),  sisters; Janis Birdsong, Mary Stewart and Ruth Carl; brothers; Billy and Gene Birdsong.

Marvin Pierce

Marvin Edward Pierce, 81, of Poplar Bluff passed away December 22, 2017 at San Antonio Regional Hospital in Upland, CA. 

Mr. Pierce was born Nov. 6, 1936 in Poplar Bluff.  He had founded and helped build Northside Missionary Baptist Church and was ordained as a deacon; later he served as deacon in Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church and most recent, Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church.  He was in the United States Army from 1954-1957 where he was on border patrol in occupied Berlin. 

Mr. Pierce was a construction worker. He had also drove for Armour meat company and had worked for Missouri Dept. of Transportation.   He enjoyed being with people, reading and studying the Bible, bird watching, jigsaw puzzles and his construction jobs.  Most of all, Marvin’s love was for his family.  He always thought he was to be at home with his wife and children every night.  He turned down many well paying jobs to do that. 

On August 22, 1958 he married Alice (Livingston) Pierce in Poplar Bluff.  She preceded him in death July 2000. 

Mr. Pierce is survived by children; Marilyn Wheatley and husband Dale, Melinda Robertson and husband Joe, grandchildren; Cole and Tara Wheatley. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents; Edward Pierce and Juanita Scoffield (Evans), sisters, Wilma Buchanan, Minnie Marvel, and granddaughter,  Daneka Wheatley

There will be a visitation 7-9pm Friday, January 5,2018 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral service will be 10am Saturday, January 6 burial to follow in Memorial Gardens.

Teresa Dawn Barker

Teresa Dawn Barker, 55, of Poplar Bluff passed away Dec. 20,2017 at her home. 

Mrs.  Barker was born Sept. 30,1962 in Poplar Bluff.  She worked at Briggs and Stratton.  She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, traveling and making jewelry.  She attended Abundant Life Christian Center.

Mrs. Barker is survived by her children; Monica DeClue and Steven Smith, sisters; Rita Sliter, Lisa Lisenby, Carrie Sliter, brothers; Alvin Sliter, Chester and Steven Sliter; grandchildren; Jordan, Kaityn, Emily, Steven, Zach, Lexi and Avery.

Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her parents; Clifton and Maxine Sliter, a sister, Brenda Sliter.

There will be a memorial service 3pm Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 at the Abundant Life Christian Center, 1888 Bradley Street Poplar Bluff, with Pastor David Thomas officiating.

Rev. Tommy Knodell

Rev. Tommy Knodell,82, of Poplar Bluff passed away Dec. 18,2017 at Mark Twain Caring Center. 

Mr. Knodell was born May 26,1935 in Wappapello.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and especially gospel music, singing with various quartets over the years including Little Brushy Quartet and the Gospel Lights.  He also preached in nursing homes, and on local radio stations for 40 years.  He also served in the National Guard. 

On Dec. 24,1955 he married Joyce Knodell in Zion, Mo.  She preceded him in death Nov.28,2014.  Mr Knodell is survived by his children; Penny Keathley and husband Ken, Cynthia Barks and husband Cary, Kurt Knodell and wife Julie, grandchildren; Matthew Keathley and wife Deana, Allison Ladd and husband Aaron, Caleb and Cody Knodell, Kelly and Mallory Barks, great-grandchildren; Elliott, Grant, Lydia, and Jade Keathley, a brother Joe Knodell and wife Donna.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, parents; Victor and Fannie Knodell.  

Visitation will be Wed. Dec.20 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at First Baptist Church.  The funeral will be Thurs. 10am at the church with Pastor Keith Carnahan officiating.  Burial will be in Wappapello Cemetery.

Letha L. Neeley

Letha Neeley 33, of Doniphan passed away Sunday, Dec.17, 2017 at her home.  

Mrs. Neely was born Dec.5,1984 in Fort Worth, TX; to her parents Terry Neeley and Maggie Heath.  They survive.  Also surviving are her children; Anastasia Rayne Brame, Jensen Alexander Boggs, brother; Allen Wayne Myers, sister; Carrie Ann Myers and many cousins and friends.

There will be a memorial service Saturday Dec.23,2017 at 1pm at Platka Church of Christ in Platka, AR

John Edgar Nelson

John Edgar Nelson 71, of Poplar Bluff passed away Dec 18 at his home. 

Mr. Nelson was born Sept. 27,1946 in Pontiac Michigan.  He enjoyed riding his Harley and fishing. 

He is survived by chidren; Johnny Mike Nelson, Carmon Nelson, Laura Kennedy, sisters; Judy Cox, Carmen Flesher, Sharon Chaepel, brothers; Joseph Marlee, Jimmy Livingston, 10 grandchildren,  18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carmon and Ellen (Livingston) Nelson, grandson; Damion Nelson, great-granddaughter, Lacy Berry and a brother; Aurther Nelson

Sharon Winters

Sharon Winters 61, of Portageville passed away Dec.16,2017 at her residence.  

Mrs. Winters was born July 21,1956 in Poplar Bluff.  She enjoyed cooking, watching television, playing cards and being with friends and family. 

She married Connie Winters Nov. 15,2003 in Portageville.  He preceded her in death March 11,2010.

She is survived by children; Arlecia Donald, Evan Bascombe the 3rd, grandchildren; Teaira Jamerson, Xavier Jamerson, Alexcia Warren, Janishia Warren; great-grandchildren; Tytonnia Bunch.

She was preceded in death by her husband Connie, parents; Marshall and Heneretta (Cleveland) Jamerson; 2 sisters, a brother; Bobby Jackson, and great-grandson Lamar Walker.

Arrangements are pending.

Clara Nadine Gunter

Clara Nadine Gunter 86, of Poplar Bluff departed this life to live forever with Jesus Christ,  her Lord and Savior, Dec. 16,2017 at her home.

Mrs. Gunter was born July 22,1931 in Poplar Bluff.  She was a nurse’s aide and took pleasure in helping the sick.  

She was a Christian woman who loved her Oglesville General Baptist Church family.  She was ordai ed in the ministry in Baton Rouge, LA in 1993, along with her husband, Frank Everett Gunter.  She married Frank Sept. 10,1989 in Poplar Bluff.   He survives.  Also surviving are children; Cheryl Phillips, Steve (Patricia) Woods; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchilren and one great-great- grandchild.  

Mrs. Gunter was preceded in death by her first husband,  William Wood, and her parents, Harry and Eillen Payne.

Visitation will be 7 to 9pm Monday at Fowler-sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.   The service will be Tues. at 11am in the chapel with Rev. Mike Price officiating.  Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
